Throughout my time at Longwood University, I have taken many different courses. Each one has guided me in preparing me for my future career by providing me with helpful resources and skills.

  • Advanced Media Writing

    • This course compared a multitude of authors' perspective writing and reporting styles. My professor conditioned me with the ability to observe calculated writing and communicate through written language while practicing skills in print, broadcast, and online media.

  • Applied Statistics

    • This course revealed that information can be manifested through two different types of data, qualitative and quantitative. It provided me with the information on how to analyze a problem and resolve it through a series of steps. This was able to teach me how to program through R, a software used for statistical graphics and computing.

  • Biomedical Ethics

    • The surrounding discussion within this course was the question of "Right vs. Wrong." These conversations explored many biomedical issues. I found that it is important to look at every side of an obstacle and come to a conclusion calmly and collectively. However, we found that in many cases there was no clear right or wrong because every individual has their own morals, virtues, and beliefs which drive their behaviors. Through the analysis of many case studies we discussed how ethics related to people.

  • Communication Ethics

    • This course allowed me to research many ethical theories and interpret readings and case studies of specific moral dilemmas. I learned that when exploring ethical theories, one should consider  morals, beliefs, and values, using both internal and external factors to justify behaviors and outcomes.

  • Communication in a Diverse Society

    • Through detailed discussion on complex readings, I was able to examine our societies through changing perspectives.  I learned that each individual has their own set of identities based on their ideas and behaviors and that identities can change based on conversations and experiences.

  • Fundamentals of Public Relations

    • Within this class, we worked in teams to conduct media monitoring weekly reports of an organization. Our group selected the NBA. Based on our research, we conducted a SWOT analysis to determine the best course of action involving PR tactics and recommendations.

  • Persuasion Theory

    • This course focused primarily on rhetoric, the analysis of rhetorical artifacts, and the series and principles that are involved in strategic communication. I used ethos, pathos, and logos as I researched Sojourner Truth's "Ain't I a Woman," speech in order to conduct an essay on the rhetorical situation of the work. This was done through careful analysis and evaluation.

  • Public Relations Campaigns

    • During this course, I conducted a public relations campaign for the Southside SPCA by evaluating appropriate media strategies and tactics. I was able to critically assess a variety of techniques to create a successful campaign program plan. At the end of the semester, I was able to give a presentation to SPCA supervisors on this potential fundraising opportunity.

  • Public Relations Research

    • This informative class taught students the research methods necessary to conduct both formal and informal research. I was able to create two different research questions and conduct two different experiments through both a survey and a focus group. I used the techniques learned from this course to complete each step of my research process.

  • Public Relations Writing

    • In this course, I utilized many different elements that I may implement in my future with public relations. I developed a news release, a pitch letter, a fact sheet and a social media strategy. Each of these different writing pieces helped me to view different strategies to marketing and advertising for an establishment.

  • Public Speaking

    • This course demonstrated the significance of public speaking, placing an emphasis on which methods should be used for specific effects. Within this class, I created a multitude of presentations through Powerpoint presented them to my peers, and evaluated the effects of chosen methods.

  • Sociology of Education

    •  I was able to, within this course, look at what education provides to the public, examining the external factors that the school system must consider as they plan out their approach on how to strategically tackle difficult situations. My final project was to create my own school system based on internal and external expectations, learning about the complexities and collaborations of organizations which must work together to achieve an effective whole.

  • Writing & Rhetoric Citizenship

    • This course focused on demonstrating the difference between strong and weak communication aspects within writing. It helped me to explore rhetorical strategies and structural procedures. This class taught me the importance of choosing precise and effective words.
